What Does Proactive Pet Care Really Look Like?

Apparently, this summer is my time for learning. A few weeks ago, I packed my bags and headed to Texas for pawTree's Paw Fest. Now I'm getting ready to pack them again. This time for Georgia, where I'll be attending the Success Unlocked Women's Business Retreat with 14 other business owners. Somewhere between Texas and Georgia, I've been thinking a lot about how much my idea of **pet care** has changed over the years. When I started Weather or Not in October 2016, the goal was pretty straightforward: provide dependable, professional care that pet parents could trust. Nearly ten years later, that's still at the heart of what we do. But I've also learned that caring for someone's pet can, and should, mean so much more. It's noticing that a dog isn't moving quite like they normally do. It's recognizing when a cat's appetite or behavior has changed. It's giving pets opportunities to sniff, play, explore and use their brains. It's learning pet first aid before you ever need it. It's thinking about nutrition and healthy aging *before* problems appear. It's even preparing financially for the veterinary emergency you hope never happens. That's the philosophy you'll hear me talking about a lot these days:

Care before the concern. Wellness before the warning signs.

It's becoming a very important part of everything we're building at Weather or Not Pet Care.

Enrichment Isn't Just an Extra

When we think about caring for pets, the basics usually come to mind first: food, water, exercise, medication and bathroom needs.

But what about their brains?

Enrichment gives pets opportunities to engage in natural behaviors, make choices, investigate their environment and simply enjoy being a dog or cat. For a dog, a walk isn't only about getting from Point A to Point B, or getting them to pee before we head back inside. Sometimes stopping to investigate that *extremely important blade of grass* is part of the experience. Sniffing, exploring and taking in the environment provide mental stimulation along with physical activity. Cats need enrichment, too. During a professional cat visit, enrichment might look like chasing a wand toy, batting around a favorite mouse, brushing, affection or companionship. And for some cats? It might mean sitting several feet away and letting *them* decide whether they'd like to interact with us today. That's enrichment, too.

Mental and emotional wellness are part of whole-pet wellness.

Try It at Home

Instead of adding more toys, try rotating the ones your pet already has. Put a few away for a week or two and bring them back later. Something your pet has ignored for months can suddenly become VERY exciting when it magically reappears.

Here's an interesting question:

When should we start thinking about senior care? Is it when our dog starts having trouble getting into the car? When our cat stops jumping onto a favorite piece of furniture? When we notice more gray around a muzzle or a little less enthusiasm for that morning walk? Maybe we should be thinking about it sooner. The really interesting part? The right time to think about healthy aging isn't the same for every pet. Breed, size, lifestyle and individual health all matter. Pet First Aid Minute: Know What's Normal

Here's one of the simplest pet first aid tips I can give you:

Know your pet when they're healthy. If you don't know what's normal for *your* pet, recognizing something abnormal can be much harder.

Pay attention to things like:
Resting breathing
Gum color
Energy level
Appetite* Water consumption
Bathroom habits
Normal movement and mobility
Everyday behavior

Try This Tonight

When your pet is relaxed, gently lift their lip and look at their gums.

What color are they?

How moist do they feel?

Healthy gums are generally pink and moist, although normal pigmentation varies between pets. You're not looking for a problem. You're learning **their normal** so you have something to compare against if you're ever concerned. That's proactive pet care in its simplest form.

Weather or Not is turning TEN!

Ten. Years. I'm not quite ready to start reminiscing yet because once I start, you may not be able to stop me. There are old photos. There are stories. There are pets I'll never forget. There are team members who helped shape this company. There are things we did in 2016 that make 2026 Lisa want to gently pat 2016 Lisa on the head.

And most importantly, there are hundreds of pets and families who trusted us along the way. So I'm saving most of that for October. But I couldn't let summer end without giving you a little warning:

Our 10th birthday is coming.

I have a feeling we're going to have some fun celebrating it.

One Philosophy | Lots of Ways to Care.

Weather or Not has changed quite a bit since 2016. Kitten Sittin' of Delaware came along. Thorin's Promise grew from an idea into a nonprofit helping pets and families through veterinary emergencies. Pet nutrition and wellness became a much bigger part of my world. I've become a pet first aid instructor. And somewhere along the way, all of these seemingly separate things started connecting. They really come down to one idea:

Helping pets live safer, healthier, happier lives and helping the people who love them care for them well.

That's what I'm taking with me to Georgia. I'll spend a few days learning alongside 14 other women building businesses of their own. And then I'll come home...hopefully with some great ideas. Probably with an embarrassingly full notebook, and definitely ready for what's next.
